Jan Rader is a firefighter and a nurse.

Jan Rader began her career with the Huntington, West Virginia, Fire Department in August 1994, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to ascend to the rank of chief within a career department in the State of West Virginia. Armed with a Regents bachelor of arts degree from Marshall University and an associate’s degree of science in nursing from Ohio University, Rader boasts a robust educational background. Furthermore, she possesses numerous fire service certifications and serves as a distinguished fire and EMS instructor in West Virginia.

Transitioning seamlessly into broader community engagement, Rader assumed a pivotal role in November 2014 as a vital member of the Mayor’s Office of Drug Control Policy. This appointment reflects her dedication to combating drug addiction in Huntington and its environs through a multifaceted strategy encompassing prevention, treatment, and law enforcement. Rader’s national acclaim soared following the release of the poignant documentary “Heroin(e)” by Netflix in September 2017, propelling her onto TIME Magazine’s prestigious list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” in April 2018. Jane has also been featured in a Ted Talk.
